How do you know if you’re really pregnant?
Even if you have pregnancy symptoms or have taken a home test, you should confirm your pregnancy with a medical-grade pregnancy test and an ultrasound. A pregnancy may potentially be detected as early as 7 to 10 days after conception.
It is important to know up to 25% of pregnancies end in natural miscarriage. Actual rates may be higher as many women miscarry before knowing they are pregnant.
How far along am I?
I am pregnant. What are my options?
If you are pregnant, you have three basic choices:
- Continue the pregnancy and become a parent.
- Continue the pregnancy and arrange for an adoption, either within your family or through an agency.
- End the pregnancy now by having an abortion.
What are the abortion laws in Texas?
If you are living in the state of Texas, on Friday, June 24th, when the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v Wade, it outlawed abortion in Texas immediately according to the Attorney General of Texas. That means you cannot obtain chemical or surgical abortions in this state.
There have been questions about confidentiality if a woman goes to a clinic, like Thrive Women’s Clinic, and shares that she may be seeking an abortion regardless of the Texas law. At Thrive Women’s Clinic, your information is secure, confidential and we will NOT report your pregnancy intentions to any entity. We are safe.
You may wonder why you would still come to Thrive Women’s Clinic if abortion is illegal in Texas? All of our services are free and you can still get a pregnancy test and ultrasound at no cost to you. This will let you know if you are pregnant, how far along you are, and allow you to discuss your options with our staff. Our nurses and the doctors that support the center are professional and care. We also have licensed professional counselors available to you as well.
Should you find yourself with needs for your children, our resource center has items from birth to 5 years old available. To learn more about our services, please call 972-428-4700 or chat to learn more.
What are the risks & side effects of having an abortion?
With any surgery or medical procedure, there are associated risks. There are two types of abortions: surgical and medical.
A surgical procedure removes the fetus from the uterus through the vagina. It’s typically done using suction and a sharp, spoon-shaped tool (curet).
A medical abortion involves taking medication early in the pregnancy to abort the fetus.
There are several potential risks associated with both medical and surgical abortions, such as:
- Pain
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Post-anesthesia complications
- Uterine atony (failure of the uterus to contract) and subsequent hemorrhage
- Uterine perforation causing potential injuries to adjacent organs (bladder or bowels)
- Cervical laceration
- Failed abortion
- Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
Potential risks of medical abortion include:
- Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
- An ongoing unwanted pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Fever
- Severe abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- If you still have questions, our medical team can give you complete information on the risks of these procedures.
