How much does an abortion cost?
The cost of abortion is determined by several factors. Below are just a few:
- How far along your pregnancy is
- If you have insurance that will cover the cost
- What healthcare clinic or state you are in
- What kind of abortion you can get
What type of abortion you can have is based on gestational age (the length of pregnancy after the first day of your last menstrual period), and viability (the fetus is progressing properly and has a normal heartbeat).
An ultrasound is an important first step to learn more about your pregnancy, figure out which abortion procedure you can have, and rule out an ectopic pregnancy.
How much should I expect to pay for an abortion?
There are two types of abortions, medical abortion and in-clinic abortion. The difference between the two is one is an oral medication taken at home and the other is a surgical procedure done in clinic.
The price of medical and surgical abortion procedures can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars. According to Guttmacher Institute, the average national abortion cost can range anywhere from $600-$3,000 depending on what trimester you are in.
Abortion cost in Dallas, Texas
Abortion in Texas is illegal in most cases. If you live in Texas you will need to consider the additional abortion costs like travel to another state, lodging, time away from work, and childcare. Other additional costs might include extra pain medication, sedation, counseling services, and in rare cases emergency hospitalization.
Anesthetics and sedation alone for a surgical abortion can cost anywhere between $435-955. Each of these additional expenses can raise the price of an abortion.
Cost of Abortion Pill:
Medical Abortion/Abortion Pill (1-10 weeks): between $650-800
Abortion Pill Online: FDA highly cautions to not purchase online
Cost of Surgical Abortion:
Suction Abortion/Vacuum Aspiration (1st trimester/up to 13 weeks): $800 or more
- You will be dilated and a suction or vacuum pump will be used to remove the pregnancy.
Dilation and Curettage (D&C) (1st trimester/before 13 weeks): $715-2,000
- D&C is similar to a Suction Aspiration in that it uses a suction device to expel the pregnancy but also includes a surgical instrument called a curette, a sharp instrument to scrape the remains of your pregnancy out of your uterus.
Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) (2nd trimester/after 13 weeks): $1,500-5,000
- This is typically performed later in the 2nd trimester. It is similar to a D&C, but requires more surgical instruments to remove the pregnancy and may take longer.
Will insurance help cover the cost of abortion?
Federally funded health insurance coverage such as Medicaid will generally not cover abortion. Most private health insurance plans do not cover abortion.
Research from Guttmacher Institute reports that 69% of women, with and without insurance, pay out of pocket for abortions.
In Texas, most private insurance plans are prohibited from covering abortion. Medicaid and Medicare also do not cover abortions in Texas.
